ABSTRACT

The term optic neuritis describes an inflammation of the optic nerve. It encompasses a group of different diseases that vary in their prevalence, clinical course, treatment, and visual prognosis. These include autoimmune demyelinating, frequently recurrent inflammations of the optic nerve, which may be associated with an inflammatory CNS disease, as well as monophasic infectious or postinfectious inflammations of the optic nerve and those associated with systemic disease or vaccination.
